The Remarks

We dragged ourselves up to the Remarkables today a little later than usual, but we had a great day on th slopes in blue sky conditions. The clouds are rolling in though, and tomorrow looks like snow, so we are off out tonight and in for a lie in in the morning.

Happy Birthday Unck D

Big up to my furry faced uncle Dave on his Birthday. I have no doubt you'll celebrate in the pub, and God damn it so will we!

World Cup

Was very glad to hear Engeeerland had beaten Equador, and Sam is pleased that Spain are storming through. However, a little gutted that we might actually have to start watching the games from now on. Viewing times are currently 3 am. Not good for skiing technique.
Come ON !

Harry

The weekend before we left, Harry got a little drunk at our flat and started repeating that he was worried we would go away and find someone better. He ignored our replies that he was quite unique, and couldn't be replaced, but he insisted on giving us a photo of himself to carry around the world so he wouldn't be forgotten.
We were right, we haven't found anyone quite like him yet, and we do miss him alot, so on occasion we get his photo out and pretend he is there.
In the pub by the fire:

On the ski slopes:

P.S Some of the shots are quite dark, so I apologise if Harry looks creepy in the first photo, and black in the last.

The Remarkables

We hit the slopes of The Remarkables today. It is the famous mountain range featured in the Lord Of The Rings. It is a little bit smaller than the other resorts but very quiet, with wide sweeping slopes and more importantly it gets the sun all day long as it's freezing here in Queentown at the moment.
We had a great day, just the two of us boarding, and relaxing in the bar. Sam is doing really well, and got the glass of champagne I owed her for yesterday. I was learning to ride rails, and fell off a few and made a few.
We now have to choose between Remarkables or Coronet for tomorrows boarding (oh hell!)
We are out in Queenstown tonight for the Winter Festival carnival and will go to the World Bar for a teapot cocktail on Ruths reccomendation. I hate to think of my sister in Queenstown - there are so many bars!
Anyhoo

Cow Tipping

Having spent a good few days up the mountain with a dairy farmer I can now dispell a common urban myth about Cow Tipping.
For those of you who don't know what this is..
Cow Tipping
Sneeking into a Cow field at night. Cows sleep standing up, so you creep up to a sleeping cow then pushing it over. Laugh alot then run away.
I personally have never done this, it just gets mentioned on drunken nights in the countryside. I don't know anybody who has claimed to do it.
However...
According to my Dairy Farmer friend its all a load of rubbish, as cows sleep lying down and only for 15 minutes per day.

So next time you find yourself drunk in a cow field, don't bother attempting to push a cow, you'll look silly.

Long Live The Cows
Chris

Coronet Peak

We were back up the ski slopes yesterday for a perfect blue sky session. The snow conditions aren't nearly as good as Mt Shutt, and the name Concrete Peak springs to mind, but we both had some great runs. Sam won a few glasses of champagne off me when she boarded the whole way down the 'M1' run without stopping. The atmposphere on the mountain was cool, it's the Winter Festival.
We will be back up there in the next few days for definitively as the forecast is for more clear weather, then snow on Thursday.
The M1 in Queenstown (a little different to Englands):

P.S Ruth & John, we have found a Law firm located on the lake shore of Queenstown. Send us your CVs and we will drop them in for you.

Truly Indescribeable.

I can't really describe what jumping off that ledge was like. I was so excited about doing it, as I'd been waiting 14 years since I first heard of bungy, but my mom would't let me do it. I wasn't too nervous waiting to jump, as watching the guys go before me kept me occupied. But then they strapped VELCRO pads around my feet and walked me out onto the ledge. If I had time to think about it I probably would of gotten alot worse, but my legs went to jelly just as the guy counted to 3. I decided to jump, so I bent my knees in preperation to jump but they didnt have the strength to push up again, so a fall was all I managed. It was such a unnatural thing to be doing, but hell it was AMAZING. The first few seconds were just insane, I remember my stomach moving into my feet, and then the biggest rush I have ever had in my life. I had promised myself I wasn't going to swear, but I needed to shout to let some of the fear out.
Then it was over & I was bouncing up and down trying to unattach my feet to swing into the sitting position. My foot had got tangled in the cable I was supposed to pull, concerned that i would totally detach myself I just hung upside down until they winched me back to the pod.
I spent the next 1/2 hour with a smile on my face and the beer I just drank never tasted so good.
Chris

He Jumped Off A Bridge!

I can't tell you HOW HAPPY I was to see Chris throw himself off a bridge!!!
The whole journey there I was extatic to be just a spectator, whilst Chris and another few blokes sat silently looking hard and not bothered (deep down inside they must have been pooped). We got to the Nevis bungy jump, the 2nd highest in the World with a 134 meter drop and WOW! It wasn't a bridge you jump off it was out of a pod suspeded by wires into a gorge. Even as a spectator I was made to wear a harness on the little lift that takes you to the pod.
It was insane to watch blokes throw themselves out into nothingness, and I got more and more nervous as I watched Chris getting his feet strapped into this velcro thing. Chris looked cool and excited, but when he sat in the chair were they attach the bungy to you the first signs of nerves appeared...others shaked but Chris just did a big breath out and started checking out his surroundings (as if doing a safty check in his head).
He shuffled slowly out to a tiny platform, stretched his arms out...3,2,1 BUNGYYYY,he leaped with all his might and dissappeared out of sight...all I could hear was f*******************************************************ck!!!!!!!!!!
It was hilarious!!
I was very proud and he was buzzing when he came up, and saying something about wanting to do it again. Full credit and well done Chris.

Sam x

P.S. Mum you asked me when I was a little girl if I'd jump off a bridge if such and such would, now you know that when I said "no" I was telling the truth!

Bungy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just booked my bungy jump. I am doing the 134m Nevis jump this afternoon. It is the 2nd highest in the world and gives you a 9 second freefall - enough time to regret jumping, loose last nights fergburger, and get over it before the elastic springs me back towards the sky.
Sam isn't doing it, she says she has no desire or inclination to do it, but I reckon she is just a pansy. Harry would of done it!
Wish me luck. I wont tell anyone that I am actually ****ing myself.

Chris

P.S.Sam here,I am too old and ugly to sucumb to peer pressure but that hurts, so I'm sorry to Matt and Sue but I might have to put a little nick in that rubber band before he jumps!!!

Queenstown

Off To Queenstown

After the caos of wednesday night they haven't reopened the road up to the ski resort. Turns out nobody actually drove thier cars over the edge. Mt Hutt are going to pay for the damage to everybodys cars (including chais).
So we are off to Queenstown tomorrow for the start of the Winter Festival, which is sponsored by a champagne company so Sam is a little over excited. We will hopefully be skiing at Coronet Peak, and the Remarkables. I dont think there is as much snow there so hopefully there won't be as many problems.
We have had an epic 2 weeks here in Methven, met some really cool people, and of course had great ski conditions.

Mt Shutt While We Were On It.

Yesterday was dangerous. Sam decided to take the day off so I went up the mountain with Jole, and Chai (an American Dairy Farmer, and an Israelie amry commander). The mountain was once again getting a huge dump of snow. By the time we arrived at the top visibility was down to about 3 meters and about 10cm of the dryest fluffiest snow had fallen. The mountain was empty, everyone else had clearly had the same idea as Sam and decided that today was not a good day to ski.
However the 3 of us went to the summit, and had some amazing blind runs down. After a morning tea break (Jole drank milk) the visibility cleared and once again I had the best boarding ever. The snow was falling so heavily that by the time you got back to the summit your previous runs tracks had been covered in snow. The distinct lack of other skiers was explained later in the day when we found out they had closed the access road shortly after we arrived. We pretty much had the rosort to ourselves. After our 30th run of the day we hear over the speakers that the mountain will be closing early and can everyone return to thier cars.
Joel and I climb back on our bus ready to depart at 3pm. Chai is driving his rental car back down, and also picks up a hitch hiker. There is now 1 foot of new snow, and a queue of cars waiting to be let down the road.
I have to explain about the access road to Mt Hutt. The easiest way is that it would never be allowed in England, America etc... it is about 4m wide with no guard rail (so they can plough the snow off the edge) and then on average a 1000ft drop on one side. On occasions the road has about 1500 ft drop on either side. The road is thick with snow and ice.
The visiblity has dropped back to roughly 3 meters. The bus leaves the mountain last and Otto (named after the school bus driver in The Simpsons) creeps down the mountain virtually blind as out of the windscreen all I can see is a white mass. He weaves left and right down an invisible road. There is no distinction between road, cliff, edge of road and sky. We all trust that he could drive the road blindfolded as he has been doing it for 20 years.
Eventually we come to a halt half way down the mountain and get told by patrol that there is a large section of ice that must be taken one car at a time. We sit and wait in turn for 2 hours. It usually takes 40 minutes to get back down the mountain. Finally we arrive at the top of the ice section. All vehicles are fitted with chains, and mountain patrol have a landcruiser with huge rugby training pads attatched to the bull bars to shunt cars in the right direction.
Everyone on the bus is pretty nervous. Its pitch black by now, the wind has reached gale force and Otto seems unsure. We start the descent and immediatly the bus slides sidewards, we are now sliding down the mountain road with Otto turning ferociously at the steering wheel. The bus goes quiet at we regain control and pass the first of the crashed cars. For the next 300 meters we see 10 cars facing in the wrong direction, some had crashed into the wall, others hanging over the edge just secured by the snow that has been ploughed onto the side of the road. Mountain Patrol 4x4s are positioned on each of the corners so that the cars hit them and bounce back into the cliff as opposed to off the edge. The bus begins to slide again, then corrects itself as we pass the other passenger bus (which had left empty) crashed into the cliff.
Finally 4 1/2 hours later Otto gets us down to mountain safe. Methven is again deep in snow and Joel and I head back to the lodge for a beer.
Chai isn't back. He left before us and hasn't arrived home. 2 hours later he walks in looking pretty miffed. He crashed his car, then a bus and 3 other cars carshed into it. Mountain Patrol didn't let him take details as they wanted to move the traffic on. He has a crumpled rental car and no insurance. The hitch hiker had stayed with him all the way until they abaondoned the car on the mountain.
Another guy in the hostel who works on the mountain tells us that the car infront of him slid underneath the back of a high 4x4 bus and smashed the windscreen. He also tells us that we, and the staff bus were the only busses to have made it down the mountain. We have no idea yet how many cars went over the edge of the cliff.
Needless to say they have shut the mountain today, and everyone is going to be taking a well earned break in the pub.

P.S We are expecting another 30cm of snow tonight :O)

P.P.S Mt Hutt has now received 2 meters of snow in the first 2 weeks of the season. Its average annual snowfall is about 2 meters!

Another Powder Day

The mountain received another 35cm of new snow last night, and today being Monday meant the slopes were empty. I had the best off piste rides ever, and managed to be the 3rd person to the top of the mountain, and got first tracks with some sneeky over taking moves. Mount Hutt is perfect as all sides of the bowl that the resort sits in are accessable via a traverse that runs around the entire rim.
Sam has improved much much more, and today she rode switch for the first time with some smooth little 360 spins, she had a grin on her face all day, but never as bigger grin as when she is sat at the bar apres ski with a warm glass of mulled wine....

Top Of The World

Saturday we boarded on some of the best conditions I have ever seen, and the best conditions Mt Hutt has had for over a decade. It snowed Friday night, so we had fresh powder until midday, and the most amazing snow on the piste. Myself, Luke and Gordy trekked to the sumit of the mountain to get treated to the most incredible views imaginable. The feeling of height when the mountain descends straight to sea level is leg trembling!

Mt Hutt

We have just had 2 amazing days on Mt Hutt. The snow is fantastic and weather is beautiful. Sam is snowboarding excellently and the views are stunning. On one side of the mountain you look over the seemingly endless Southern Alps, over the other you can see the ocean.

The forecast is good for the next few days, and even more snow is expected.
We are in heaven.

Mt Shutt Day 3, & The Coolest Guy In The World

This just isn't funny anymore. Again everyone gets up and gets into their ski gear. Its blue skies, not a hint of wind, and what seems like a perfect day.
Snow Report : Mountain Closed due to avalanche and broken power cables.
We can't believe it and start to wonder if they will ever open it. The town is full of eager people waiting to go up the mountain. We all settle in for another day watching videos.
At about 12pm, Luke (an Aussie staying at the hostel) and I decide that we have to got out boarding and plan to drive his car to the foot hills of the mountains and find a slope to walk up. Sam and Ally (Lukes girlfriend) decide to come with us. We drive for a few kms and turn up at the bottom of a nice slope with 1/2m of powder snow on some fram land. We ask the farmer permission to climb his hill and board down, he thinks its a wicked idea and lets us do it.
1/2 hour later we have trudged up the hill and slid down. We see Murray (the farmer) ploughing a quad bike through the snow on the hill opposite, not thinking much of it we start to climb the slope again. Until Murray drives up to us, he explain that he has plouged out a track for us on the other hill, and offers us his quad bike to use for the rest of the day. He shows me how to use it then turns round and walks back to his farm house. Sam and I are in shock, that has to be one of the coolest things anyone has ever done.
I spend the next 5 hours running up and down the hill having the best time of my life, giving everyone lifts on the bike.
We returned the bike at sunset and offer some petrol money, he totally refuses and tells us to come back tomorrow if the mountain is shut again.
After a dissapointing morning we ended up having one of the best days of our travels so far.

Murrays Sheep:

Mt Shutt Day 2

The alarm went off at 7am, we had already made a packed lunch and got all the gear ready the night before for a day on the mountain. Having woken up the see the snow in the middle of the night and no wind everyone was buzzing waiting for the bus to arrive to get up the mountain and get those first tracks.
7:15 am and Heather - the hostel owner walks in with news that killed us all - the mountain was closed AGAIN!
The road up to the mountain was blocked - they had recieved 1 meter of new snow overnight!
After we all sat around the fire and grumbled for an hour we saw the brightside and went outside to build a snowman. It was still chucking it down with snow and Methven looked amazing!
Then the power went out. Everyone rushed to the supermarket to get the last of the hot pies then we all returned to the hostel for a day of pictionary, monopoly, videos, beers and alot of talk about skiing.
We are staying at a place called Skiwi house, which is an great little place with a big open fire, and big comfy sofas. Everyone in the hostel is really great, and we cant think of a better place to be snowed in.
It snowed all day and by the end we had 50cm of snow outside the house.
Tomorrow is going to be a perfect day on the mountain.

One Of The Coolest Feelings In The World...

... is when you wake up in the middle of the night for a toilet break, look out the window and see this:

We weren't expecting snow at the village level, and needing the toilet anyway I nearly wet myself when I saw it. I woke Sam up to show her, then lay awake until it was time to get up.
We lay in bed listening to everyone else look out the window for the first time and go crazy.
It's the equivalent feeling to when you were 5 years old on Christmas eve.

Irish For 60 Minutes

Watching the rugby in a NZ pub is great. For a start everybody in the pub is actually watching, and secondly some of them partake in bits of the hakka which is cool. There was 1 Irish guy, Chris and I cheering for Ireland. The one Irish guy made up for the lack of support, he jumped around the pub shouting at the top of his voice and when an All Black injured an Irish player he shouted "Call the police! Call the police!" which cracked us all up. Ireland were kicking butt for 60 minutes of the game. The AB's faces were a picture until they came back to win the game. In the last 10-20 minutes the Irish guy who had been voiciferous became subdued, with his head in his hands he couldn't bring himself to look at the screen, poor guy!!
We felt gutted but soon recovered when we remembered we weren't Irish anyway.
Roll on the England game tonight!

P.S. Conmiserations to Dave F

Mt Shutt

Having gone to bed early and excited, we woke up this morning to 100kmph winds which turned Mt Hutt into Mt Shutt. The road is closed up to the mountain because they have had cars blown off the road in lighter winds. The hostel was full of boarders & skiers desperate to go up the mountain today, but instead we have all had a lie in, and are sat watching corny snowboarding movies by the log fire. Sam is baking a cake.
Its not all bad though as the forecast is for 1/2 meter of snow tonight, we dont have a flight to catch for a long time and the rugby is on at 9:30pm tonight in the pub.

World Cup Plans

Its the Friday before the World Cup starts and I bet everyone back home is deciding where to watch the England Game. It was always either The Pub, home alone, or home with a load of friends. My first choice for the early games would be at a mates house with a load of friends, then for the later games there is no other choice but the pub.
However, spare a thought for me whose choice was to fly to the other side of the world, to a country that doesn't give a dam. The only sign of the world cup is a pair of helium football balloons tied to a railing in Christchurch Cathedral Square. I looked at the times the football we be on TV here... 1:30am, 3:30am, and 6:30 am. So given that the Kiwis all go to bed at 10:00pm, dont open the pubs till midday, and rarely have Sky TV at home, then its certain I won't be watching ANY live games. I wondered where all the english blokes were in NZ, now I know why....no other idiot was silly enough to be in this country during the world cup, they have all winged it so that they are in South America etc..

Anyway, enough complaining, I'll be thinking of you all in the pub or at home having a wicked time, but all is not lost as the All Blacks are playing Ireland this saturday night at 7:35pm so I'll be there shouting for our neigbours.

INGERRRLANDDDD!!
Chris

P.S One thing I wont be missing are those overweight football girls stood right in front of the big screen smoking a fag and spilling their pints down last years England shirt screaming and screeching at the tops of their chavvy little voices. If you see one this weekend get a photo with your camera phone and send it to me for posting on the blog.

P.S.S The Aussies really do think they are going to win!

The LAW!

All pubs and bars that we've been to so far have a great warm atmosphere, but we noticed something rather interesting about them. They all clearly display a poster that says the following:

*********************

THE LAW:
Intoxicated people are not permitted on licenced premises. People becoming intoxicated here will be required to leave.

*********************

We thought that was a little harsh to enforce, because surely as soon as you start sipping your first glass of wine you are becoming intoxicated!

Anyway it's serious stuff, the bar can get fined between two and ten grand, so I guess the trick is to become intoxicated in a quiet sort of way (so glad Harry isn't with us, we'd get chucked out of everywhere, and all the pubs would have to shutdown due to heavy fines)

Moby Dick

Went whale watching today. Saw some fine examples of 16 meter sperm. It was great fun although the first two dived just as we were approaching. The third one chilled on the surface for a while before waving goodbye with his tail.
Off to Christchurch tomorrow, then up to the mountains on the 10th.

A BIG Dump!

On the front of the New Zealand Herald this morning was a large picture of the Mt Hutt ski resort,... covered in deep snow. They had a massive dump of snow last night which is just in time for us to get there for this weekends opening day. GET IN !!

Kaikoura

New Zealand is jaw dropping. This morning we crossed the Cook Strait through the Marlborough Sounds to Picton on the South Island. Then we hopped on a bus which took us to the Whale watching town of Kaikoura. Out of the left window I could see a lone surfer riding a perfect point break, then out of the right window I looked up into the snow covered Southern Alps. Sod living anywhere in Australia, I want to live here, own some sheep and live in the middle of nowhere skiing in the winter and surfing in the summer.

Waitomo To Wellington

An 8 hour journey on a bus should have been a drag right? Well not yesterday! From Waitomo we took a little mini bus 1st which was driven by Bill (about 80 years old) and his co-driver Brian (about 78). They were sooo sweet, and on the way to get our connecting bus they took us to a rabbit shearing shed. Yeah I know! I thought they where kidding but I couldn't believe my eyes when we arrived, here is the type of rabbit they had there (it's called Angora Rabbit, it's from Germany):

They had one sat on a pillar and it was the most loveable thing I've seen, it just made me burst out laughing! But then, even more hilarious was the one that was being sheared!!!! Oh my word! The poor little thing was half shaved stretched out on was looked like and S&M contraption looking really embarrased. Here's a pic:

After that the 4 of us continued our journey, Bill was telling us lots of facts about the area and some really bad jokes when he suddenly pics us a michrophone and starts to talk through it even though we're right behind him. Both of us cracked up but he took it very seriously.
30 minutes later we waved a sad good-bye to the dynamic duo and got on a large comfi coach for th next few hours. I was going to read but neither Chris or myself could take our eyes off the stunning scenery. Chilli palms pressed hard against the windows as we pressed our faces as close to the glass as we could to take-inn the most breath-taking sights. The whole way we nuddged each other to draw attention to one side of the coach or the other as snow-capped volcanoes popped out of nowhere, and field that looked just like 'The Shire' in Lord Of The Rings lay ahead for miles.
We arrived in a very atmospheric buzzy Wellington (which we'll be returning to on our way back), and warmed our very frosty breaths with a rich glass of Merlot, a Winter Ale and a Venison Pie.

Waitomo Glowworms.

I have been excited about this ever since Scott told me about it in Thailand. We arrived in Waitomo, dropped our bags and ran to the caves. It was AMAZING! They are little worms who lie in a hammock hanging from the cieling, they drop down sticky strings and make their tails glow bright green which attracts flys. The flys get stuck in the strings, then the worm reels the flys up and eats them. The more hungry the worm the brighter its light is. Awesome.
They dont allow photos inside but a photo wouldnt do it justice anyway, its like looking straight up at the milkyway.
I got Sam to make the guide take us through twice :)

Never Take Valium When...

....you haven't checked how long your flight is going to take. We woke up in Sydney at 7:30am after 2 hours sleep, all four of us still drunk (especially Andy). After laughing at each others hangovers over a cup of tea, it was time to leave for the airport. Thinking our flight to NZ would be about 6 hours long Patrick suggests we take a few valiums to knock us out. His advice... take them just before you board. That we did.
The flight landed a meer 2 hrs 45mins later and the drugs had only just kicked in. Sam and I were screwed. Our eye lids were dragging on the floor and the hypnotic movement of our bags circling the baggage belt 3 times took us deeper into sleep. How we arrived at our hostel I have no idea! Anyway, we are hear in NZ and it is stunning.

Friday Night With The Boys

On Friday after a little session of fancy dress in the house, the four of us hit Sydneys' gay scene . Again, we had an awesome time, and finally my dancing didnt stick out like a sore thumb because there was 200 other guys dancing the same!
We had far too many beers and some shots called a 'Cowboys Blow...somethingorother' but we were determined to have an early night because we had a flight to catch the next morning and would have to be at the airport by 7.30 - 8.00am.
We started off at a couple of bars, then a club, and then it got to 12.45 and we decided to dash to another club to catch another drag show at a different club which was due to start at 1am. The idea was to leave immediately after.
The club was called The Midnight Shift and it wasn't long till most people had taken their shirts off and Italian drag queens with stubble touched up their make-up in the loos. Time flew and before we knew it it was later than we expected. We got home at around 5.00am and had 2 hours sleep...we felt very very very rough, and we looked and sounded like the zombies on 'Shawn of the Dead'. But it was worth it, we made the flight, and had a really cool time with Patrick and Andy.

Candy Floss Wigs And PVC Catsuits!!!

Pink candy floss wigs, black PVC catsuits and lashings of lipgloss on slightly fuzzy top lips is what it was all about...
We had an absolutely fabulous time when we stayed with Patrick and Andy in Sydney. Thursday night Patrick took us to the ledgendary Imperial Pub. It's legendary because it is where they filmed the opening scene of the film "Priscilla Queen of the Desert". It's a scruffy old place but at the back I saw one of the most enternaining, dimple inducing, side-splitting and beautiful things I've ever seen, and it was a Drag Show!!!
I've never seen one before and to be honest I wasn't expecting too much, just a few blokes looking like ugly birds being over the top. Boy was I wrong!
The drag show was 'Grease' and its was increadible; the acting was 1st class, the outfits to die for and it was hilarious. I couldn't believe it was free either, I would have paid 40 quid to watch it and come out very happy.
In the breaks the drag queens came and mingled, after 5 too many beers Chris was dared to go kiss a drag queen. Then Patrick instantly thought "Caption competition" for the blog, and decided it would be a laugh for us the take some more photos for you to fill in the speech bubbles. So if you are bored at work or fancy humiliating Chris (in a light hearted sort of way) then on the comments refer to Pictue 1, 2, 3 etc and write what each of us would be saying, Chris: Sam: Patrick: or Shirley Legs Diamond (i.e. the tranny)
We had a wicked time although the next day kind of hurt.
